How the theft risk score works
The score estimates how attractive a vehicle is likely to be to thieves where it’s kept. It adds up the factors below and caps the total at 100. It is a guide to help you decide how much protection you need — not an insurance rating and not a prediction that your vehicle will be stolen.
| Factor | Where it comes from | Up to |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Every vehicle starts here | 10 |
| Make theft profile | Our own rating of how often each make is targeted | 35 |
| Keyless / relay exposure | Whether the make commonly has keyless entry (our estimate by make, not your exact car) | 15 |
| Vehicle age | Year of manufacture from the DVSA MOT record — newer scores higher | 10 |
| Local vehicle crime | police.uk vehicle crime reported around your postcode area over the last 12 months of published data | 30 |
| Wider area | police.uk vehicle crime within about 10 km, latest published month | 10 |
| Estimated value | Our estimate from make, age and mileage | 14 |
| UK top-20 most-stolen model | DVLA figures for 2025 (via a freedom of information request, reported by What Car?, February 2026) | 20 |
| Motorbike | Added for motorbikes, which are stolen more easily | 29 |
Bands: under 25 low · 25–49 moderate · 50–74 high · 75 and over critical. If a data source can’t be reached, that factor scores 0 and is marked “unavailable” on your result — it is never guessed.
What it can’t tell you
- It isn’t a stolen-vehicle check. It doesn’t tell you whether a car is recorded as stolen. For that, use a vehicle history check before you buy.
- Police data runs behind. police.uk is usually 2–3 months behind, coverage varies by force and Scotland isn’t included, so local figures can be low or missing.
- It doesn’t know your set-up. Where you park overnight, a garage, a steering lock or a tracker you already have all change your real risk, and none of them are in the score.
- Make-level estimates are broad. Keyless flags, theft profiles and values are estimated by make, so two versions of the same model get the same figures.
Your data
Your registration and postcode area go to the DVSA MOT History service, postcodes.io and police.uk to run the check. This website doesn’t save them, the result isn’t stored or published, and nothing you type is sent to our analytics. Only if you ask for a quote do we keep your details, to contact you about it — see the privacy policy.
Common questions
Will my score affect my insurance?
No. It’s our own guide, not an insurance rating, and we don’t share it with insurers. Your insurer uses its own data.
Which vehicles can I check?
Cars, vans and motorbikes that have a DVSA MOT record. Type DEMO as the registration to see an example result without a lookup.
How can I lower the risk?
Keep keyless fobs in a signal-blocking pouch away from doors and windows, switch off keyless entry if your car allows it, use a visible steering or wheel lock, and park off-road or somewhere well lit when you can. A monitored tracker doesn’t stop a theft, but it means someone is watching and can work with the police if your vehicle is moved.
Why does my score say “unavailable” for a factor?
One of the lookup services didn’t answer. That factor is left out (scored 0) rather than guessed, so your total may be lower than it would otherwise be. Try again later for a full score.
